Fugly Friday - and Contest!

Of course it's fugly Friday. You didn't think I'd let you down just because I'm off cavorting with sexy new yarns, did you?
Today I bring you something that truly makes me cringe. These are not fugly in and of themselves. In some (read: unused) lights, they're kind of cute. I'm sure it was very useful, perhaps necessary, back in the day, but the thought of making it modern times truly horrifies me.

It's knitted diapers. Well, okay, knitted diaper covers, I guess, but it will all work out the same in the end (especially on that end). They're called "knitted soakers," so that kind of tells you just what they're going to be used for.
It's actually from a really nice site, Glamarama's vintage knitting patterns. There are some really cute patterns there (like this sexy blouse). (Also, there are some very silly hats , which might get their own post later.) But....I just couldn't do this to my knitting. Babies do a lot of gross things. I have enough issues with the thought of a baby barfing on a sweater. This is why I will only make baby things out of washable yarns.
I'm sure things like this and cloth diapers are wonderful and lovely and good for the environment and will pamper your baby's bottom, etc, etc. But you're making something the kid is going to poop on. And not just any poop, technicolor baby poop.
No, no, my friends. We have moved past an age where these should be knit. (Or at the very least, used.) Make something that collects less disgusting body fluids.

Also, in a blantant attempt to destash, I've decided to host an ongoing fugly contest. Have you personally knitted something fugly (like my Mrs. Clause sweater)? Or something that started out all right but has gone horribly, comically wrong? Send me a pic. If I use it, you could win fun things from my stash. Enter as many times as you like. Void where prohibited by law, and all that.
What's in my stash? Some good stuff, I assure you, and I promise not to send you the Red Heart Acrylic. (Unless you want the Red Heart Acrylic, in which case, hey. We can discuss it if you win.) Hopefully I'll get a ravelry invitation soon and you can see the goodies for yourself.

When I was perusing the knitting groups on yahoo, I saw that there was a group dedicated to knitting soakers. Definitely not my cup of tea, although I do think that the tree hugger in me will use cloth diapers should I ever had a kid of my own. I think that the first time there was poop on my beautiful knitted item, I would hold some sort of secret resentment to the poor kid. It's best just not to go down that road.

Oh, for me, the resentment so would not be secret...

Ha! That is just wrong.
My knitting is too important to let a baby poop in it.
However- not too important to let a baby spit up on it.
...I must ponder this......

Oh man, I am going to start looking around for fugly knitting in my apartment right now. Hmm, let's see what I can find. . . .

Sarah, this is totally off topic (although I really enjoy your blog) but I just wanted to offer my unflinching support on all things that have gone on with ugliness and hasty judgments recently. You were right and HAVE a right to offer your opinion about that yarn store's practices. I have to tell you, though, I have been boycotting Albertson's Food Stores for more than ten years because they won't support the Food Bank here--choosing to throw away their near-date dairy and produce rather than give it to hungry people. It hasn't seemed to have had an impact on their bottom line and my stridentness on the subject may be the reason why no one invites me to parties anymore but you know what? What's right is RIGHT. You go, Girl. --Barb

PS: I hate people who use that phrase. "You go, Girl." Where the hell did THAT come from?

Eww, those are just wrong. LOL at the technicolor baby poop. Eek - no thanks.

I have a fugly garment to send you - made from Rowan Cotton Braid.

I don't have your email, so I will post my fuglies on my blog...

oh c'mon! I knit a pair of soakers for my grandson recently, in superwash wool. Even for those using disposable diapers, it is still fun and very useful, to create 'fancy pants' shorts, and nice to do so in easy wash wools or even cottons. Sure, they'll grow out of them, but they grow out of ALL their hand-knitted baby-stuff, and it is all supposed to be worn anyway, right? :-) So even if they aren't actually being "soaked" as in olden days (when they used lanolinized wool for waterproofing), they're better to look at than plain ol' plastic diapers.

And, made with machine washable sock yarns, they can be down-right cute.

I surfed over from McRay Weaving, and I have to weigh in on the diaper thing...as an 8 and a half month pregnant woman who is currently ingaged in knitting soakers for her future wee one. These are covers for cloth diapers, so they don't actually get pooped on, and if you treat them with lanolin they are liquid resistant, so "soaker" is actually a misnomer. They're just like those awful plastic pants except breathable, and and soft. Anyway, thanks for the link! I've been looking for good soaker patterns.

I can definitely win your fugly Friday contest with my picture. I'm emailing you the picture of my drunken family in the collection I knitted. The poncho is Bernat Galaxy, with 2 fun fur hats and an earflap beanie on my sister. The whole collection was much more interesting when drunk......

I posted my picture on my blog.

When my mom was a girl in war-torn Germany, they had to knit their own feminine hygiene products. Mercifully, there are no pictures. She's just been reborn as a knitter, but she only knits scarves. That's it. Who can blame her?

Oh, God, I'm drunk. I just failed the word verfification part of posting this comment.

Hey, it's here now. I was about to claim a conspiracy and then I was going to cast aspirsions on some poor hapless, happy, completely normal and totally nice knitter and ignite some sort of flame war... Oh, wait. That's been done.

(Do you think I sound bitter?)

You don't have to approve this one!
