Hmm, so Kate tagged me a few days ago with this one. Why not?
(PS. I got to see Kate last week! You know how sometimes when someone leaves for a while and then comes back, you have absolutely nothing in common and nothing to talk about? Well it was exactly the opposite with Kate. It was like she never left, which makes us all miss her all the more.)
1. What were you afraid of as a child?
Honestly? The rapture. I would wake up terrified at loud noises and storms, and think Jesus was coming, and since I wasn't being lifted up, I hadn't prayed for forgiveness recently enough.
No harm done by religion there.
2. When have you been most courageous?
Ending bad relationships.
3. What sound most disturbs you?
I'm not a fan of licking.
4. What is the greatest amount of physical pain you’ve been in?
Remember that thing with the gauze in my mouth? That.
5. What’s your biggest fear for your children? (or children in general if you don’t have some of your own.)
That I'll have a handicapped child and not be able to deal with it.
6. What is the hardest physical challenge you’ve achieved?
I climed Mount Washington in Vermont.
7. Which do you prefer: Mountains or oceans/big water?
Neither. I'm a Midwesterner.
8. What is the one thing you do for yourself that helps you keep everything together?
I think the knitting thing is fairly obvious.
9. Ever had a close relative or friend with cancer?
Both grandparents.
11. What is the best part of being in a committed relationship?
Having someone you can do nothing with.
12. What is the hardest part of being in a committed relationship?
Staying in one.
13. Summer or Winter?
Fall.
14. Have you ever been in a school-yard fight? Why and what happened?
No, not really.
15. Why blog?
To keep track of my work, and to gossip with all my knitting friends.
16. Did you learn about sex, and/or sex safety from your parents?
All from my mom. More than I wanted to know, really.
17. How do you plan to talk to your kids about sex and/or sex safety?
The same textbook, age-appropriate way.
18. What are you most thankful for this year?
My new little kitten. :) He's such a cutie.
Ah, now the tagging time. It doesn't say how many to tag, so I'll get Amanda and Jen, and anyone else that wants to.

It's the SP11 Questionaire!
Here are is the questionnaire for SP11. Please be sure to post it in a spot on your blog where your pal can easily find it. Since your pal will use this to help create your packages you'll want to have it posted to your blog no later than August 15th.
1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
I like natural fibers. I'm not a total yarn snob, but I'm very iffy on acrylics. Also, I'm not comfortable with Tofutsies because of the crab shell content, but that's not likely to come up much.
2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
A very spiffy Della Q circular bag, and some homemade roll up ones for straights/dpns.
3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I've been knitting about 6 years or so. I would consider myself advanced intermediate, partially because I know if I say "advanced," I'll do something like screw up garter stitch.
4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
No, but now that you mention it, it's a good idea.
5. What's your favorite scent?
Lavendar for relaxing, citrus for energizing.
6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
Oh yes. Favorites are chocolate cherry and chocolate mint.
7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
I knit and crochet pretty regularly. I'm an early beginner at spinning, but I hope to take some classes this fall. I do not cook or do anything else vaguely domestic.
8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
I'm into a little of everything, but mostly sort of indie/punk rock. I can certainly play MP3's.
9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?
I love reds, pink, and purples. I'm kind of picky about greens, and I usually don't look good in yellow or orange (though I don't have anything against them personally).
10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
I have one cat, who is spoiled rotten. I'm single, but the boyfriend visits a lot.
11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
No on the ponchos, yes to everything else.
12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
I've been on a bit of a sock spree lately.
13. What are you knitting right now?
I'm trying to tackle the UFO situation. It's pretty out of control.
14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
Of course!
15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
Circular, anything but plastic.
16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?
I do indeed, and it's very cool.
17. How old is your oldest UFO?
Since I began knitting, so about 6 years.
18. What is your favorite holiday?
Does my birthday count?
19. Is there anything that you collect?
I do have a weakness for Hello Kitty.
20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
I don't subscribe to anything right now, but I usually pick up Interweave Knits in the shop. I always like something new and interesting. I have a lot of the popular books, but I'm trying to pick up the classics.
21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?
I want to learn to spin properly. I'd like to get better at slip-stitch patterns.
22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?
I am a rabid sock knitter. Women's US 7.5, pretty average.
23. When is your birthday?
October 8, which happens to be in this Secret Pal cycle.....(hint, hint)
24. Are you on Ravelry? If so, what's your ID?
Not yet....but I'm getting close. Look for updates.
*EDIT* Now I am! I'm theoriesofstring.

Tagged Twice
On the same meme, no less, by Madalyn and She'saCrafyOne. I guess I'm obliged...
Each person tagged gives 7 random facts about themselves. Those who are tagged need to write on their own blog those 7 facts as well as the rules of the game. You need to tag seven others and list their names on your blog. You have to leave those you plan on tagging a note in their comments so they know that they have been tagged and to read your blog.
I did something similar a while ago, with knitting content. This one is all non-knitting content.
1. I'm a secular humanist. Check us out at the American Humanist Association website. For a while I just considered myself "not religious," but it turns out that what I believe matches up with humanism quite well.
2. I love bad daytime TV. Dr. Phil, People's Court, you name it. I even went to a taping of the Jerry Springer show.
3. I have no rhythm, epically, tragically so. I could not find a beat with a metronome. When attempting to dance, I have to focus very hard and watch the people around me.
4. I have a serious caffeine addiction, particularly in the form of Diet Coke. I have no intention of changing this.
5. I match my underwear to my outfit.
6. My apartment is a disaster area, but there are certain regions that must be in complete control. My DVD's must be alphabetized, and my clothes must be organized by type and color. I have no explanation or justification for this, but it's my apartment, so that's how it goes.
7. I am compulsively early. Tell me to be there at 10, and I will be there by 9:45. I will consider myself late if I am not there by 9:55. Aparently this is an oldest/only child trait.
Now the tagging other people part. I have to find the people who haven't been tagged yet, which is always tricky.
We'll try:
Amanda (and see if she actually does it)
Carrie Penny
E
Jamisyn
Jess (who seriously needs to let us know what she's been doing with that new spinning wheel)
Kristine
Vicki
Also, Lorna and Kate, if you had blogs, I would so tag you. Get with the program here.

Sarah is the Man, Jimmy is the Woman
Have I happened to mention what the boy's name was?

Secret Pal 10
Look what I stumbled on - it's Secret Pal 10!
I'd seen people posting about these things on their blogs, but I'd never signed up. It looks like a lot of fun, a non-holiday chance to spoil and be spoiled. All you knitters out there should sign up.
And here's the mandatory survery.
The Questionnaire
Here are is the questionnaire for SP10. Please be sure to post it in a spot on your blog where your pal can easily find it. Since your pal will use this to help create your packages you'll want to have it posted to your blog no later than the last day of February.
1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
I like natural fibers, the softer the better. I would kill for handspun. (Okay, maybe not kill. But at least commit a major felony, like bank robbery or something.) I do not like most acrylic yarns, or even blends.
2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
I have a cool roll-up case I made for my straight needles, one my friend made for me for my dpns, and a spiffy one from Della Q for my circular needles. They all live in the Mobile Knitting Command Unit, the rolling tank that is my knitting bag.
3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I've been knitting for about 6 years, and I learned out of various books. I'm somewhere between intermediate and advanced. See the post on knitting paranoia.
4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
No, sorry.
5. What's your favorite scent?
I like citrus scents and lavender.
6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
Oh, but I have a sweet tooth. I love chocolate cherries and anything chocolate mint.
7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
I crochet fairly often. I can sew, but don't do it very much. I'm very much a beginner at spinning, but I have a really cool wheel. Other various art projects make an appearance from time to time.
8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
I like just about any music but rap or country. I can certainly play MP3s.
Know what's really cool? Audiobooks and clever podcasts.
9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?
My favorite color is red, but I like pinks and purples too. You really can't go wrong with neutrals either.
Not a fan of green, really. Or oranges and yellows.
10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
I have two pets, one cat and one boyfriend. Only the cat lives with me though.
11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
I do not wear ponchos, the rest are cool. (I'm rather on the small side though, especially my hands.)
12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
I really like bags and hats, especially if they have an interesting construction. Sweaters are fun too, but very much a long term commitment.
13. What are you knitting right now?
I'm not at liberty to discuss that.
14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
Are there people that don't?
15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
I prefer circular needles. I like bamboo or wood best, but I usually wind up with Addis. Not really a fan of plastic, but if there's something really cool out there I'd try it.
16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?
No, but I use the one at the LYS.
17. How old is your oldest UFO?
Oh god. Since I started knitting?
18. What is your favorite holiday?
I like birthdays (and I don't mean just mine).
19. Is there anything that you collect?
Dust, but I don't need any more of it.
20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
I can't wait for the next Yarn Harlot book. Someday I'll invest in the Barbara Walker books. Also, all the EZ books besides Knitting Without Tears. I have a subscription to Cast On (but I can't say I like it that much).
21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?
Some day I'll get past socks.
22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?
I am not a sock knitter, and you can read my many laments to that fact. I wear a US women's 7.5.
23. When is your birthday?
October 8.

Knitting Quiz
What Kind of Knitter Are You?

You appear to be a Knitting Goddess. You are constantly giving and are unconcerned with reward, you simply want others to love knitting as much as you do. If someone wants to knit miles of novelty yarns, you are there for them. If someone wants to learn short row shaping, you can help. There are no taboos in knitting, only opportunities to grow. Everyone should have friend like you around if they want to learn to knit, and there's a good chance that your passion has rubbed off on a few others.http://marniemaclean.com
Take this quiz!

He he he.
I'm it!
Kristine tagged me with this meme. I think it's my first official tagging. Be excited.
Six Weird Things About Me
THE RULES: Each player of this game starts with the ‘6 weird things about you.’ People who get tagged need to write a blog of their own 6 weird things as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don’t forget to leave a comment that says ‘you are tagged’ in their comments and tell them to read your blog.
As Kristine puts it, weird is relative. So I'm going to stick with the knitting things, otherwise this would be way more than six things.
1. I don't knit socks. Reasons why are here, here, and here, in addition to several places in my closet. There are far too many things that I want to knit to waste my time on something I don't like. I may do at some point just for the sheer joy of conquering it, but I don't expect it to be soon.
2. I read knitting books like most people read regular books. I read them in the bath, in bed, when I need something to read, always.
3. I taught myself to knit out of a book. My aunt tried to show me when I was younger, but she knits continental, and I knit American. Mostly it was the "I taught myself to knit!" pamphlet from Walmart, with grating metal needles and squeaky acrylic yarn. The book that made me a knitter was Debbie Stoller's Stitch 'n' Bitch.
4. I classify my (many) projects by how much attention they require. Things that are large and/or complex, such as blankets, serious lace or charted projects, stay at home. Travelling projects can involve minor shaping or counting rows, like basic sweater pieces. Movie theater projects must be so simple you can knit them in the dark. (Not knitting at the movies is not an option.)
5. I have a hope chest. This may seem strange for a card-carrying feminist, but it mostly started with adorable baby projects I couldn't bear to give away. I make no apologies. Even if I don't have children, there's bound to be a special child in my life at some point.
6. Unless I'm doing something very complex, I don't look at my knitting. I love how this freaks people out.
And now for the tagging others part. Kristine already got most of my blog friends.
I'll try tagging Amanda, but she seems to think law school is more important than knitting right now. Pfffhhhht.

That Thing That's Been Going Around
No, not that cough/ flu thing (although I had that too), the one about blogs where you post your first sentence(s) from each month this last year.
January: Well, okay, I owe you a brief explanation of what string theory really is.
February: Have you ever noticed that when you're working on a project during a movie, or while you're thinking about something, whenever you pick it up again, you find yourself reminded of what you were doing before?
March: So here's the thing. Once a week, my department has a physics colloquium, where someone comes in from another department or another school and gives a physics-y lecture. Naturally, I use this time to further my physics education by exposing myself to a broad range of research, by which I mean knit.
April: So I really haven't posted in about a week.
May: Yes, I know you want shiny, pretty pictures of knitted objects, but I'm going to disappoint you once again.
June: So after some hard work and recorded TV shows this weekend, I finished Cassie's wedding shawl.
July: In the midst of shawl madness, I took a little break to make these sweet little baby booties.
August: Well, tomorrow I leave for Germany and the Czech Republic.
September: I was back visiting my parents yesterday. Although they have three cats, they evidently still have a mouse problem.
October: Now that the cold weather has hit, and hit hard, it's time to break out my brand new sweater.
November: It's not that I haven't been knitting. I really have, even on the scuba trip. It's just that I'm still knitting the same thing.
December: The stash has reached outrageous proportions. Someone asked me if I could fill a bathtub with it, as a measure of insanity. I could fill the tub with the amount of yarn I have hidden in the living room alone, let alone the main stash in my closet.

Quizzes
Inspired by Kristine's country quiz, I wandered over to bluepyramid.org myself. They didn't really get the country thing right for me, I'm so not Vatican City. (Anyone who knows me will laugh until they get stigmata from that one. ) However, it did totally nail the book quiz.
You're The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!by Douglas AdamsConsidered by many to be one of the funniest people around, you are quite an entertainer. You've also traveled to the far reaches of what you deem possible, often confused and unsure of yourself. Life continues to jostle you around like a marble, but it's shown you so much of the world that you don't care. Wacky adventures continue to lie ahead. Your favorite number is 42.
I am, in fact, right now, wearing my high school volleyball jersey. My number is 42.
I love internet quizzes. They make my insomnia worthwhile.

Because I'm feeling a little self-absorbed right now
Go to Wikipedia. In the Search box, type your birth month and day (but not year). List three events that happened on your birthday. List two important birthdays and one interesting death. Post this in your journal.
Events:
1871 - Four major fires break out on the shores of Lake Michigan in Chicago, Illinois, Peshtigo, Wisconsin, Holland, Michigan, and Manistee, Michigan. The Great Chicago Fire is the most famous of these, having left nearly 100,000 people homeless, although the Peshtigo Fire killed as many as 2,500 people making it the deadliest fire in United States history.
1939 - World War II: Germany annexes Western Poland.
2004 - Martha Stewart goes to jail.
Births:
1890 - Edward Rickenbacker, American pilot (d. 1973)
1943 - Chevy Chase, American comedian and actor
Death:
1869 - Franklin Pierce, 14th President of the United States (b. 1804)

No news is no news
Not too much on the knitting front. I made a pair of baby booties with the leftover Blizzard, but they don't have buttons yet, so no picture for you. I'm finishing some embroidering on a little crochet baby sweater, then it needs buttons too. I don't actually have children, or expect to have any time soon, but baby items are just so quick to make. Then I like what I make and can't bear to part with it (which doesn't actually bode well for my future children). Well, I'm storing it all up in a hope chest for use someday. But that someday is going to be a long time from now.
Worfy was a good guard cat yesterday. There was a little brown and black cat outside my window. I thought about trying to go save the cat, but Worfy got all fluffed up and scared it away. I don't really get how that works. I think it's incredibly cute when cats fluff up, and being cute doesn't seem like a particularly good defense mechanism. One of my friends cats fluffs up when she's happy, which is ridiculously cute and makes much more sense to me. Maybe it works against humans. We start melting into a little pile of "awww, kitty" because we can't handle that much concentrated cuteness. But aparently it's scary in cat terms, because the other cat really did back off. I think Worf was rather proud of himself.
Watch the Olymipcs! All of you!
(And especially watch Joey Cheek, because I'm developing a crush on him. )
